The background

This independent London bookshop needed a new website to raise its profile, drive foot traffic from local audiences and visitors to the city, and build a community around its love of books.

The brief

The requirements included:

  • Accessible, mobile-friendly design in keeping with the shop’s branding
  • FAQ page and staff recommendations, with a dedicated page per reviewer
  • Book of the Month feature
  • Browse books by genre, with curated lists integrated with Bookshop.org
  • Events listings for book launches and other in-store events
  • Newsletter setup and list-building capability (no existing subscriber base)
  • Interactive map and optimised Google presence to drive foot traffic
  • New photography throughout, retaining selected existing content
  • Network integration with other independent booksellers
  • Full documentation and training for relevant staff

The solution

We took new photos and incorporated them into a re-designed, responsive and accessible website in close collaboration with bookshop staff. We built the site in WordPress with a modified off-the-shelf theme and open-source plugins to enable custom content types and user journeys via different routes.

We migrated content from the existing site, implemented newsletter capabilities using MailChimp and updated the Google business listing, among other changes.

We deployed the site to a staging server for UA testing prior to the successful launch.
